Telegram is a great way to connect with businesses, but some scammers take advantage of that by creating fake accounts and tricking people into handing over personal information. Fortunately, that’s now a thing of the past, as Telegram has announced unique verification icons businesses can use to prove they’re the real deal.

Telegram’s Verification Icons Are a Scammer’s Worst Nightmare

This new feature is part of an update announced on the Telegram blog. The update comes with a ton of new features, such as giving people the ability to react to a service message (such as a missed call) and adding extra features to the chat search feature.

However, the biggest change is giving businesses the ability to apply for a unique icon next to their name. This is different from the verified checkmark notable individuals and organizations have; instead, a business can apply for a unique icon only they can use.

This is good news for Telegram users, as the platform has had an impersonation problem as of late. There are plenty of scam bots on Instagram that claim to be from a business but will instead phish all of your personal data for its developer’s nefarious needs.

As noted in the instructions for Telegram verification, companies can get on board once they add an official, verified bot. Once done, the company can assign or remove their unique icon on accounts and chats. This can really stymie the efforts of scammers trying to impersonate companies or their employees; if they don’t have the icon, then everybody knows they’re not the real deal.

Unfortunately, while this is an excellent way to tackle fraud on the platform, there are still plenty of avenues a scammer can take to steal your data or money on Instagram. As such, it’s a good idea to check out common Telegram scams and keep yourself safe.
