About the Competition

The proposed Online National Case Commentary Competition is designed to provide a platform for students to apply theoretical legal concepts to real-world scenarios. This competition aims to cultivate strong analytical skills, encouraging participants to dissect complex legal issues and craft well-reasoned arguments.

Case commentary is a pivotal aspect of legal education, fostering practical application and enhancing legal research and writing skills. Focused on landmark Supreme Court cases, this competition will contribute to developing legal understanding among participants, empowering them to address pressing legal challenges.

List of Cases

The competition will centre around the analysis of landmark cases, including:

  • A.K. Gopalan VS. State of Madras, AIR 1950 SC 27
  • Animal Welfare Board of India v A. Nagaraja & Ors, (2014) 7 SCC 547
  • Justice K.S. Puttaswamy (Retd.) Vs. Union of India and Ors., (2017) 10 SCC 1
  • Indira Nehru Gandhi v. Raj Narain 1975 SC 2299
  • Kaushal Kishore v. State of Uttar Pradesh & Ors., (2023) 4 SCC 1

Eligibility and Guidelines

The competition is open to undergraduate and postgraduate law students currently enrolled in any recognised institution or university in India, lawyers/ advocates, researchers and scholars. The submission guidelines, formatting guidelines, and eligibility criteria will adhere to industry standards, ensuring a fair and competitive environment for all participants.

  • The team composition for the Competition shall be either an individual member team or a maximum two members Team.
  • Inter-Cross college or university team registration is allowed in this Competition.

Formatting Guidelines

  • The submission should be typed in Times New Roman, Font Size-12, Line Spacing-1.5, and justified.
  • The footnotes must be typed in Times New Roman, Font Size-10 and Line Spacing-1.
  • The margins should be 1 inch or 2.54 cm (normal) on all sides.
  • Every citation must follow the ILI citation format.

Submission Guidelines

  • Participants must submit a verified copy of their student Identity Card or bona-fide certificate along with their entry.
  • The case commentary must be in English and Microsoft Word format (.doc/.docx). Submissions in other languages or formats will be summarily rejected.
  • Each author is allowed only one submission, and co-authorship is permitted.
  • All entries must include a cover page containing the author’s name, Institutional affiliation, course and year of study, email address, and contact number.
  • Identifying information should not be included in the commentary text, and any violation will result in immediate disqualification.
  • The commentary must be an original and unpublished work, not under consideration for publication or participation in any other contest.
  • Plagiarism in any form will lead to immediate disqualification.
  • The recommended word limit for the commentary is 2000 – 3000 words, including citations.
  • Participants must submit a case commentary on any ONE of the cases.

Submission Deadline

Participants must submit their case commentary to the link provided before the deadline of 11:59 P.M.,12th March 2024.

Awards

The competition will recognise and reward the efforts of the participants with the following awards:

  • Winner: Trophy + Certificate of Appreciation
  • 1st Runner Up: Certificate of Appreciation
  • 2nd Runner Up: Certificate of Appreciation
  • All Participants: E-certificates

Registration and Fee

The registration period will commence on 27th February 2024 and conclude on 10th March 2024. Registration is free of cost.
