About HRLJ
The Human Rights Law Journal (HRLJ) is the annual double-blind peer-reviewed publication of National Law University Odisha. It aims to foster research on national and international human rights and contemporary legal issues across disciplines. It publishes original articles, case comments, book reviews, and analyses of significant legislative, judicial, and policy developments.
It is guided by an editorial committee and an advisory board comprising distinguished legal luminaries from across the world. The Journal encourages contributions that seek to expand the frontiers of legal thought through innovative approaches to research and writing.
Submission Type
Articles
Articles should be in the nature of a comprehensive analysis of the issues being dealt with. They must provide an in-depth understanding of the relevant issues through either doctrinal or empirical research. Comparative studies outlining the similar and contrasting features of different systems of law are also encouraged.
Case Comments/Legislative Comments
A case comment should provide a critical appreciation of any leading/recent case of a judicial authority. The comment should also explain the impact of the judgment on the law as it existed prior to the judgment and the impact of such judgment on the future development of law. A legislative comment should be a well-knit analytical report of any legislative enactment in the form of a statute, an amendment to a statute, rules under any statute, or notified government regulations or policies.
Book Reviews
The authors are expected to analyse any book written by leading scholars and academics in terms of the overall relevance of the book. Authors are expected to examine the contribution of the book on existing domain knowledge and also its relevance in further developments of law. Authors are also expected to highlight such elements or themes discussed in the book, which are either unexplored or underexplored.

Submission Guidelines
Format and Citation
- Font Type and Size: (Main Text): Times New Roman, 12
- Font Type and Size: (Footnotes): Times New Roman, 10
- Line Spacing (Main Text) and (Footnotes): 1.5, Single
- Citation Format: OSCOLA
- File Format: .doc or .docx
- Name of the File: Name of the Author + Title of the Submission
- Headings and Sub-Headings: Headings and Sub-Headings should be numbered, should be of the same font type and size as the main text and should be in bold.
Maximum Word Limit
- Articles: 6000 words excluding footnotes
- Case Comments: 3500 words excluding footnotes
- Book Reviews: 2500 words excluding footnotes
Authorship
- Co-authorship up to three authors is allowed.
- Academicians, professionals, and researchers are invited to submit their work.
How to Submit?
The Human Rights Law Journal welcomes original and unpublished articles, case comments, and book reviews for consideration in its upcoming issue. The submissions will undergo a double-blinded peer-reviewed process. Final selection will be made on the basis of the review recommendations by the editorial board. All submissions are to be emailed to [email protected].
Deadline
The deadline for submissions is 20th July 2025.
Editorial Policy
- Only original and unpublished work must be submitted for consideration. The submitted work must not be under consideration for publication elsewhere.
- Author(s) must take particular care that their work does not infringe on the rights of third parties and that they have obtained necessary permissions for cited work.
- All submissions would be scrutinised for plagiarism. Plagiarised manuscripts will be rejected.
- While all efforts would be made to inform the corresponding author of the progress of the submission through various stages of review, in view of the number of submissions that the journal receives, an individualised response may not be possible in each instance.
- Decision of the Editorial Board on all matters shall be final.
- There are no submission fees, publication fees or page charges for this journal.
