If You Want More Accurate Google Maps Directions, Try This Calibration Method

Is Google Maps inaccurate? If you find Google Maps accuracy lacking on your device, calibrate it using this easy method.

How to Calibrate Google Maps

Google Maps is the best app for navigation. However, it might not always be accurate, and as such, it provides a built-in solution for tuning it for more precise directions.

Here’s how you can use the built-in calibration feature for more accurate directions in Google Maps:

Calibrating Google Maps using the built-in calibration tool requires you to be outside to work.

  1. On iOS or Android, open the Google Maps app.
  2. Tap the Location icon in the bottom right of the screen (above the Direction icon). This will pinpoint your location on the map using a blue dot.
  3. Tap your location (blue dot) on the map. Google Maps will reveal a new menu to calibrate the app.
  4. Select Calibrate , hold up your camera at surrounding buildings and any signs across the street from where you are, and scan your surroundings in a horizontal line to help Google Maps determine your exact location.

If the calibration succeeds, Google will display a message telling you your location accuracy is high. If Google can’t pinpoint your location, Google Maps will allow you to retry the calibration.

Alternatively, if you use an Android phone and the blue dot is either wide or pointing in the wrong direction, you can hold your phone and move your hand to make a figure eight for more accuracy.

Google Maps may not always give you accurate directions.

However, if the accuracy is off, you don’t need to switch to a Google Maps alternative. Instead, calibrate your app using the trick provided above and continue enjoying Maps as your go-to navigation app.
